Ulla Lenze will read from her work ‘Der Empfänger’ (The Receiver), which was published in 2020. In this profound novel, Lenze tells the story of the life of Rhineland emigrant Josef Klein, sheds light on the espionage activities of the Nazi regime in the USA and tells of political entanglements far from home. Her stylistic mastery is evident in her ability to harmonise the inner struggles of her protagonists with the changes of the times, weaving a multi-layered, fascinating narrative.
Deniz Utlu is one of the outstanding voices in contemporary German literature. In his latest novel ‘Father's Sea’, the protagonist Yunus sets off in search of his father's scattered memories after he suffers a stroke. The father, who can only communicate through eye movements, becomes a symbol of the complexity of memory and identity. In his multi-award-winning novel, Utlu poses the question of how memories are created, how they change over time and across cultures, and what role they play in personal and collective history.
The event will be held in German and will be supplemented by interpreters Dorothea Hemmerling and Margit Schlösser in Spanish.
