Children's Books on Tour 2023 - Autumn Collection
As Oscar Wilde once said, “The best way to make children good is to make them happy” – and we cannot think of a better medium than books to do just that! With our bi-annual Children’s Books on Tour Collection we introduce new titles written in German and predominantly, though not exclusively, for younger readers. That’s the point of the Children’s Books on Tour Collection: to help ensure that stories are not limited by borders.

We human beings go into the forest to experience nature, but we often behave loudly and carelessly. How would a woodland animal perceive us? This richly illustrated book allows children and adults to experience the forest through the eyes and ears of a vixen. We accompany her through one whole year of her life. We learn how she hunts, eats, communicates, marks her territory, brings up her young, and finally, how she experiences human beings.

What would our maps look like if the boundaries were drawn by nature? The simplest way to divide the earth's surface is by biomes. In this way, 14 different terrestrial habitats can be described, defined by their fauna and flora, their geological makeup and their climate.
The artist and environmental manager Juliana Aschwanden-Vilaҫa has created a book that introduces these biomes with striking illustrations. In doing so, she opens our eyes to the fragility of the world. This artfully designed non-fiction book is suitable for children aged 10 and up.
Born in Brazil, Juliana Aschwanden-Vilaҫa studied architecture and landscape architecture. After several years in the environmental industry, she completed a master's degree in illustration to devote herself primarily to environmental issues through art. Her work has won several awards.

Life has changed a lot since the "Mirror" appeared in the sky above London. The Mirror is a parallel world reflecting a magical version of the city. Since then, mysterious,, addictive blue liquids have become available, and the powers they lend to users carrying special artefacts, the „Sigils“, are of a dark and dangerous kind.
Orphaned Rayne knows this better than anyone. Using these powers to fight is her only chance of survival in today’s London, however.
But then she loses control of the magic. There is only one person who can save her, the young reigning lord of the Mirror. He gives her a choice: either the magic that is flowing in Rayne’s veins will kill her – or she must bind her life to the Dark Sigils, the seven artefacts of the Mirror’s ruling dynasties. The first book in a trilogy.

This lucky pig does not feel lucky at all. It always makes sure that everyone else finds their luck, but it never seems to be able to do that for itself. And so it wonders: what will it take to make myself happy? Ladybug, Lucky Fairy and Chimney Sweep are clueless, too. But then the Lucky Charms get lucky! When they meet little Felix, he shows them that happiness can be found in the smallest of clovers in the field. An artfully illustrated picture book with an important message: happiness looks different for each and every one of us. What makes you happy?
Dorothee Eva Herrmann, also known to her avid young fans as Fairy Doro, conjures up stories with her bundle of magic pens. Plenty in life makes her happy: her family, cat Lillie, fairy tales, a boundless imagination, dancing, colours, harp music, the scent of roses, and the sea.

Nate is a near-sighted octopus. Because he's so shy, he barely ever leaves his cave – until the day he wakes up to find his favorite arm has worked itself into a terrible knot! Nate ventures out into the open sea to look for help … and soon encounters Shelly Shrimp. Along the way, anxious Nate learns a lot from other animals. In the process, he learns that life is an adventure to be experienced. This expressive picture book illustrates that nothing is impossible if we are brave enough to face our fears, show compassion and acceptance, and be true to our feelings.
Nothing makes Julia Regett happier than creating. In addition to illustrating books, she enjoys working in a shared studio space and designing her own postcards. »Kick Up a Fuss, Nate Knottopus!« is her second children’s book with CalmeMara. So, reading is stupid because it takes so long? Not if your snail sets the pace. Reading is stupid because it’s all made up? Not when the “Sams” jumps off the page and taps you on the shoulder. Reading is boring because you have to do it by yourself? Not if a magical creature reads with you. Reading is tiring? Then follow the rabbit’s lead – he reads in his rocking chair! Silke Schlichtmann and Nils Freytag have collected a whole lot of prejudices and, with the help of 20 of the best German illustrators, proven them wrong. The result is a charming picture book for people of all ages – which will make you want to read all the more!
Nils Freytag was born in 1966 in Lübeck and grew up in a small village in Ostholstein. He is a historian at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and lives with his wife, Silke Schlichtmann, and their four children in Munich.
