Andreas Suchanek, born in 1982, studied computer science but pursued writing, winning awards including the German Fantasy Prize. The Whispering Forest is his first children’s book created with Timo Grubing – a freelance illustrator who works in a variety of genres from books to games.

Freedom shapes our lives. It is a fundamental right, but it is not experienced by everyone at all times. Freedom has had to be fought for long and hard, and for many people it remains unattainable. 

Sybille Hein’s book helps children to understand what this big word means and feels like: why freedom can mean being allowed to be different. Why being free means being able to know and ask everything. And also why it can become complicated sometimes … 

Sybille Hein studied philosophy (halfway), illustration (to the end) and toured for many years with her cabaret programmes. Today she lives in Berlin with her family and showcases various talents. She writes books for young and old, radio plays, satirical texts and many songs. Her illustrations can be found in books, on fabric collections and regularly in children’s television programmes.

Eventually the animals agree that things can’t go on like this. They need rules. Not so easy when there is no one in charge. But together they come up with lots of great ideas and find really fair rules for EVERYONE! 

Günther Jakobs, born in 1978, studied philosophy and design majoring in illustration. Since then he has worked in a shared studio in Münster as an illustrator for both children’s and adult books.

An extraordinary book that will dispel kids’ fears, and have both children and adults in stitches – because adults can be chicken too sometimes. Of course, little kids are afraid of some things. In Nele, Adam and Zaima’s case, it’s hearing aids and loud snoring. But would they run away during a thunderstorm or when they see a black cat? That only makes fear bigger, they think. And so they decide to creep up on fear and pinch its tummy instead. That way they don’t just get rid of their own fright but also that of some of the adults.

Nikolaus Heidelbach was born in 1955 and is regarded as one of Germany’s best contemporary illustrators. His picture books have won many awards, including the Special Prize of the German Youth Literature Award. 

Ole Könnecke, born in 1961, lives in Hamburg. He has designed 30 books, for which he has won several national and international awards.

Cornelia Travnicek, born in 1987, is a researcher at a centre for virtual reality and visualisation. Picus published her children’s books Zwei dabei and Before the Alarm Goes Off, as well as her novel Fairy Dust. 

Raffaela Schöbitz, born in 1987, is a freelance illustrator and author. She was shortlisted for the World Illustration Award in 2021. For Picus she has previously illustrated Gute Reise, Eierspeise!, Planetenspatzen and Before the Alarm Goes Off.

Franziska Biermann studied at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences for Design. She lives in Hamburg, working as an author and illustrator on her humorous book and film projects. Her most famous character is Mr Fox. Mr Fox Loves Books won second place in the Troisdorf Picture Book Award. Franziska Biermann is a recipient of the Baumhaus-Boje-Media Award and was honoured with the Young Literature House Award in 2021.

This masterfully illustrated picture book is a unique cultural history of hats. Using hats as examples, it shows how diverse our world is. Because not only are hats and head coverings attractive and eye- catching, but they can also achieve the exact opposite by making their wearers invisible, in a sense, protecting them from stares. 

The book’s subject is vibrantly portrayed: one hat is presented across from the next in single-page layouts, followed by double-paged, and so alternate throughout. Numerous detailed close-ups help the focus and flow. Hats off! 

Hats is Karen Exner’s first (and hopefully not last) picture book with Carlsen.

Katharina Grossmann-Hensel was born in Mülheim and studied illustration in Hamburg. She lived for three years in Paris, where she also published her first picture book. She now works as a freelance author and illustrator in Berlin, collaborating with various publishers across different genres ranging from caricatures for adults to illustrated children’s books.
