It leads him to the Whispering Forest, where a hidden world awaits – and an adventure Luke will never forget.

Freedom shapes our lives. It is a fundamental right, but it is not experienced by everyone at all times. Freedom has had to be fought for long and hard, and for many people it remains unattainable.
Sybille Hein’s book helps children to understand what this big word means and feels like: why freedom can mean being allowed to be different. Why being free means being able to know and ask everything. And also why it can become complicated sometimes …
Sybille Hein studied philosophy (halfway), illustration (to the end) and toured for many years with her cabaret programmes. Today she lives in Berlin with her family and showcases various talents. She writes books for young and old, radio plays, satirical texts and many songs. Her illustrations can be found in books, on fabric collections and regularly in children’s television programmes.

The lion is the boss. With his mighty roar he keeps order in the savannah. But one day he is so hoarse that he can no longer make a sound. Chaos breaks out! Everyone does what they want, many argue. Eventually the animals agree that things can’t go on like this. They need rules. Not so easy when there is no one in charge. But together they come up with lots of great ideas and find really fair rules for EVERYONE!

An extraordinary book that will dispel kids’ fears, and have both children and adults in stitches – because adults can be chicken too sometimes. Of course, little kids are afraid of some things. In Nele, Adam and Zaima’s case, it’s hearing aids and loud snoring. But would they run away during a thunderstorm or when they see a black cat? That only makes fear bigger, they think. And so they decide to creep up on fear and pinch its tummy instead. That way they don’t just get rid of their own fright but also that of some of the adults.
Sybille Hein, born in 1970, studied philosophy (halfway through) and illustration (to the end) and has toured throughout Germany as a revue performer. Now she lives with her family in Berlin. She is an author and writes radio plays, satire and subversive songs.

Bedtime stories for the brave. Tonight, Boris and his little sister Celeste are home alone and Celeste wants him to tell her a bedtime story – a really spooky one! Boris loves making up stories about scary ghosts lying in wait in the dark for little girls …
Bor-ring, says Celeste. Or about giant toads that creep up on you. Aw, how sweet! says Celeste. She makes fun of dragons, man-eating lizards and monsters with several heads. There’s nothing that spooks her. Until she thinks up a story that has Boris quaking in his boots.

One day Mother Duck finds a strange egg in her nest. Once it hatches, she names it Jen. But Jen doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the ducks: they even make fun of her. As it turns out, Jen is actually a hen and not a duck! Mother Duck decides to take Jen to a farm to find out more about her heritage, and while walking through the portrait gallery Jen learns that her ancestors were dinosaurs! How cool! But Mother Duck’s heart is heavy: will she have to let go of Jen and leave her with the other hens?
A touching story about a mother’s unconditional love and searching for your origins.

18-year old Katrina is undead – and deeply in love with Tate, a hunter of supernaturals and thus her archenemy. It’s a challenging situation, because Tate has had to follow her wherever she goes since the failed soul curse. Meanwhile, a series of missing-persons cases is keeping New Arcadia on edge: someone seems to be deliberately creating the undead. Katrina has an agreement with Death himself: she must stop the undead or someone she loves will die by the end of the year.

This masterfully illustrated picture book is a unique cultural history of hats. Using hats as examples, it shows how diverse our world is. Because not only are hats and head coverings attractive and eye- catching, but they can also achieve the exact opposite by making their wearers invisible, in a sense, protecting them from stares.
The book’s subject is vibrantly portrayed: one hat is presented across from the next in single-page layouts, followed by double-paged, and so alternate throughout. Numerous detailed close-ups help the focus and flow. Hats off!
Hats is Karen Exner’s first (and hopefully not last) picture book with Carlsen.
