All you need
The 20 most important things in life

First of all, you need a great friend you can really rely on. And a mum who comforts and cares...

First of all, you need a great friend you can really rely on. And a mum who comforts and cares for you – even if she’s annoying sometimes. Another crucial item on the most-important-things list is an aunt or grandma who always has time to play. Every child should have their own room, bed and bike as well as a soft toy or pet animal to cuddle. And they should be able to cook their favourite meal and play an instrument.

Christoph Hein also illustrates why discoveries and inventions should be part of every child’s life, and why good stories, tears and being in love are all necessary for perfect happiness.

For as long as he can remember, Jukka has been living alone in a lonely bay with his foster father Bittermoon. Whenever Bittermoon isn‘t sitting in his rocking chair on the roof of his boat, smoking his pipe, he likes to enjoy his treasures. And his most cherished treasure is a heart of glass resting in state on a velvet cushion in his captain‘s cabin. But sometimes Jukka can‘t help wondering about the faraway places beyond the vast desert that borders his beach...

One day, Kandidel Wind, the travelling saleswoman, arrives with her daughter Lila. To Jukka‘s great surprise, Bittermoon already knows Kandidel. While the kids need some time to get used to each other, the adults quickly rekindle their old love. But after a heated argument between the adults, Kandidel disappears – and the heart of glass disappears with her. Bittermoon is sick with anguish about his stolen heart. Since his happiness seems to depend on it, Jukka and Lila decide to steal the heart back. And Jukka is determined to finally discover the big world beyond the bay. The two kids, who have become fast friends, start their journey to the White Mountains, Lila and Kandidel‘s home. But Jukka and Lila will have to go through many adventures before they arrive there and uncover the truth.

Every morning Roy rides excitedly to kindergarten on his horse Desperado. But one day everything is different: the kindergarten has been ransacked, the seesaw is broken and the swing has been torn down. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, Heidi the kindergarten teacher has been kidnapped by the evil bandit Black Beard! Roy and Desperado set off immediately to follow his tracks in the sand.

As experienced trackers, they find his secret hide-away in no time. But can they free Heidi? Roy wouldn’t be the bravest rider, and Desperado his most fearless of horses, if the two of them didn’t have a brilliant plan. By combining brainpower and horsepower, they manage to chase Black Beard away and bring Heidi home. What an adventure! Or, as Roy puts it: “just your average day at kindergarten”.
